Analysis of a dance Music Video
Imagine Dragons Radioactive
Main Focus of the Music Video
The main focus of the video is around a pseudo-animal fight ring. There is a prominent story, therefore, and ends in the rescue of the members of the band Imagine Dragons, the artists of the song.
Camera Angles
There are a large range of camera angles, such as low angle shots (0:06), over-the-shoulder shots and eyeline matches (0:07) and high angle shots (0:13). There is also a prominent use of focusing and depth of field shots such as 0:18 and 0:24, drawing attention to important things on the screen. Lighting is also important with smoke plumes being seen at 1:01 thanks to the beams of light from the roof.
Mise en Scene
The MES in the video is a collection of central american (continent) dressing, with a focus on fedoras/cowboy hats and sombreros and an almost cartel or organised crime appearance with people smoking cigars and wearing suits, like the antagonist in the video. Some of the MES creates enigma within the video, such as when the cage is covered up, and the lack of backstory, creating questions as to, for example, why the band members are locked up under the
Dancing/Acting
There is no dancing as such in this video, other than some small cuts to the band members, but the majority of the video is acted out. This portrays a clear storyline as a result, with a clear antagonist (the guy in the chair with the suit/his monster) and the protagonist (the woman seen at the start/her teddybear thing).
Editing
There are many quick-ish cuts in the video, and there is a use of matching the actions in the actual video with the editing, such as when one of the 'challengers' is slammed on the floor by the 'champion', the video shakes to reflect this. In addition, at 1:29/1:30, the falling of the challenger is matched with the beating of the drum hit by one of the members of the band.
